Mohammad Asghar AM has called on the Welsh Government to ensure that Newport gets fair share of any increased funding provided by the UK Government to help resettle refugees in Wales.
The AM for South Wales East, said:
“Newport is one of the UKs designated dispersal areas in Wales for refugees.”
“As a result the financial burden of resettling refugees has fallen mainly on these designated dispersal areas.”
“A spokesperson for Newport Council recently said that Newport was now close to its maximum quota of asylum seekers. I have asked the Welsh Government to confirm that any increased funding received from the UK Government to help resettle Syrian refugees should go to those local authorities that have so far shouldered the bulk of the cost burden associated with this policy, such as Newport.”
“I am also asking what the Welsh Government is doing to ensure other local authorities in Wales take their share of refugees.”
